Sorry to get ranty, but I have to respond to something Cort said today. He mentioned that he is now for both term limits and campaign financing, and while I am all for the latter (and appreciate the sentiment) I can tell you the latter has failed in Michigan.

We have a two term limit for all state offices, and while it has reduced the number of career politicians (barely, mostly it's just increased the number of former office holding lobbyists), It's caused more harm than good.

We've had an annual budget crisis in Michigan for like 10 years now (if I'm exaggerating it's not by much), and you can't blame the automakers for that because they mostly all left in the 80's and 90's. The problem is every year the politicians go for short term fixes and "creative accounting" to make it appear as if the budget is balanced, but do nothing to either cut services severely enough, or, god forbid (sarcasm) increase taxes to actually fix the problem since they will be out of office for the long term fallout.

This is just the biggest example, there are a hundred little and big things that the government does in Michigan that are incredibly short sighted because no one in office cares what will happen in 8 years.

Oh and we made the term limits part of our state constitution (along with our anti-gay marriage bill), so it will be fricking impossible to get rid of them.

Quote:George Lucas to Donate HALF His Money!

by Alison Nastasi Aug 5th 2010 // 1:15PM

I can't even really conceive of what a billion dollars is in practical terms -- so the concept of having billions is completely unfathomable to me -- but if I did have access to that kind of cash, I'd like to think I'd be one of the people who's agreed to take part in The Giving Pledge. Conceived by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, the pledge enlists billionaires who promise to give half of their wealth to charity. That seems unfathomable to people living paycheck to paycheck, but I have to wonder if someone like Gates would even miss the 25 billion or so he'd be giving up.

There are 40 billionaires who've currently pledged to participate -- including one George Lucas. The film mogul often gets a bad rap from fans for ruining Star Wars with bad spin-offs and "revised" re-releases -- and we've all made jokes about him rolling around on beds covered with cash -- but this is a really great gesture on his part. See? Maybe all that money you spent on The Phantom Menace and Star Wars action figures and collectibles did serve a greater purpose. Take that, Mom!

Lucas joins other notable rich folk like Gates, Buffett, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, T. Boone Pickens, and more on the list. The Giving Pledge isn't a binding contract, and participants can freely donate more than 50% of their wealth if they choose (Buffett has pledged 99% of his -- hear that? it's the sound of his heirs groaning ... ) and can decide where it goes. Still, sounds like a nice gesture. Let's all remember this next time we're complaining about Lucas milking his franchises -- clearly he's just doing it so he has more money to give away one day.

http://www.cinematical.com/2010/08/05/ge...his-money/

Quote:Storytellers are teachers and communicators who speak a universal language. That was Homer’s primary role, and both Plato and Aristotle used narratives and dialogues as a means of educating. Good storytelling is based on truths and insights, and a good storyteller is ultimately a teacher – using the arts as a means of making education emotionally meaningful. These are all tools at our educational system’s disposal, but too often we aren’t making use of them.

When I was in high school, I felt like I was in a vacuum, biding time. I was curious, but bored. It was not an atmosphere conducive to learning. I was fortunate that I found my path and my language.

It’s scary to think of our education system as little better than an assembly line with producing diplomas as its only goal. Once I had the means to effect change in this arena, it became my passion to do so – to promote active, life-long learning. I believe in the artisan school of learning, through apprenticeships and Aristotelian questions and discussion. This level of engagement dates back to the beginning of human life, but it’s still the best way of doing things. There have to be universal standards – particularly in education – and while it seems unwieldy, there is a willingness among educators to share their best practices.

Ultimately, that is why I created Edutopia and the George Lucas Educational Foundation.

The focus of GLEF has been to share educational innovations – cooperative and project learning, mentorship, parental involvement, and technological advances. This all comes straight from those on the front lines, from teachers who are putting these methods into practice. We are the facilitators. Our goal has been to showcase bold successes and inspire others to further increase the appetite for education. Our hope is that administrators, teachers, and parents will see the power of these collective efforts and join the fight for wider reforms.

But reform is just the beginning. We need to build new foundations, fostering independent thought and a desire to keep learning. Our students need to come away with more than just survival skills, and more than just what is required to complete the program. We need to promote critical thinking and emotional intelligence. We need to focus on building an education system that promotes different types of learning, different types of development, and different types of assessment. We have an opportunity and an obligation to prepare our children for the real world, for dealing with others in practical, project-based environments. It’s about working together and building character – being compassionate, empathetic, and civil as a means to a greater end.

As technology changes, so do students. So should classrooms, and so should our methods of teaching. In a few short years, connectivity has gone from a technological novelty to a daily necessity. It’s how our culture communicates, and our children are at the forefront of its use. Understanding those tools – and how to integrate them into learning – is an integral step in defining our future.

My pledge is to the process; as long as I have the resources at my disposal, I will seek to raise the bar for future generations of students of all ages.
I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future – and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt – as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.

Quote:George Lucas to Donate HALF His Money!

I got seriously into comics about 5 years ago - mostly via trades - and started reading monthly issues a little over a year ago. I follow 20-25 books monthly now, and have definitely started to notice the gradual expansion of my collection and the impact on my wallet. I’m learning to be a bit more discerning in what I buy, but there’s so much good shit out there right now (in my opinion) it’s hard to decide what to drop.

I’m sure (at least hoping?) I’m not the only one with this problem – especially with the rising cost of all worldly items these days, not the least of which are comics (e.g. great cap to Smith/Flannigan’s Widening Gyre, but did the final ish have to jump to $6? Really?).

So if you’ve experienced this in the past, or are dealing with it right now, what’s your solution? Hold off until the trades come out? Check your libraries? Save money and share issues/trades with friends? Scale back and stop spending so much goddamn money?

Sorry if this is an age-old question with comics fans. Like I said, I’m relatively new to it.

How the wrestlers will use them is up to them. They may bash them on the opponent or use them for more complex architectural violence. For example, they may lean one ladder against another to use it as a launching ramp or stack a table on top of another. So when the body crashes through it, it looks cool. Developers are planning to apply this new physics to the cars as well. Things seem to be a lot more exciting.
